What is Reflexology

Reflexology is a holistic complementary therapy that stimulates the body’s own healing potential through deep relaxation, which helps the body’s systems to work more efficiently. Reflexology is a holistic therapy which means we treat the person rather than the symptoms they present.

Reflexology is based on the principle that specific areas on the feet, hands, face and ears represent organs and systems in our body. By asserting pressure on the reflexes, uric acid / calcium deposits that have built up in our systems through stress, illness etc. are broken down and released, creating restoration of ‘homeostasis’ and an even, well balanced flow of life.

Reflexology, the Meridians, and the Elements:

When I did my reflexology diploma, we studied the reflexes and their respective placement on the feet. However, we also largely focussed on the 5 elements and their 12 meridians. Studying these three in combination gave a much wider understanding and perspective on reading the feet and signs of the body.

Please refer to my page on ‘Elements and their Meridians’ to read further about this.

The Benefits of Reflexology

There are many benefits to Reflexology but some of the most common benefits include its ability to stimulate nerve function, increase energy, boost circulation, induce a deep state of relaxation, help relieve sleep disorders, reduce anxiety and depression, eliminate toxins, help prevent migraines and stimulate the central nervous system. Furthermore, it helps to relax a pregnant mum and soothe the pains of pregnancy, even those occurring after the baby is born.

Stress has a huge impact on our health. We live in such a fast-paced society nowadays that we don’t have time to relax and unwind and our health, bodies and minds are affected by this. Stress related illnesses are becoming more common and it’s important to find ways to relax and unwind so our amazing bodies can rest and heal. Being in a state of constant stress has devastating effects on our bodies which lowers our immune responses, suppresses our digestive system, reproductive system and neurological system.

Reflexology promotes balance in physical, mental, emotional and energetic levels of the human body. It also produces the most profound and deep relaxation. It is in this state of deep relaxation that stress levels are reduced and feelings of well-being are produced.
